We welcome everyone to our studio from solo creators, right up to parties of 16. So when visual artist, Lorna Johnson got in touch, we couldn’t wait to see her creations develop in our studio!
Artist in The House – Lorna Johnson

Lorna is a visual artist living and working in Leeds, who is currently undertaking a practice-led Ph.D. at the School of Fine Art, Art History and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds.

Working predominantly to make artist-made objects, sculptural installations/assemblages, and collage, Lorna’s work is inclusive and experimental. Whilst there is a respect for the traditions of the techniques, she strives to offer a refreshingly open approach to the materials and methods that might be utilised.
This is currently taking a central role to the research she is conducting as part of her practice-led research; Yorkshire Hoards – Understanding the objective/subjective value of the objects we continue to earmark, lay, maintain, stow, put away through the artist’s edit.

Over to Lorna…

“Working with Cast has been my first toe in the water in regards to working with actual silver and gold as a material. I have always worked with materials that I felt I could easily play with and working with silver or gold as a material has always felt a bit off-limits, financially and not understanding the process as to how I could go about doing this.

However, my current research has got me to a place where I have wanted to get to grips with how I could possibly use and make in these materials. Hence, Cast offered me the perfect opportunity to be able to do this really easily, ask all the questions I have about this process (!) and more importantly has really made me want to make more in these materials, thanks to their great team and fab service – thanks, everyone!”
